Healing Waters at Two Bunch Palms
Last week Rob and I were in need of a quick last minute getaway from LA, so we decided to book a stay in the desert. I threw a couple swimsuits, comfy pjs and a few good books into my travel bag as that was all that was needed for where we were headed.
On the scenic and windy drive there, we passed through the iconic windmills while getting nostalgic and blasting old school emo music (Taking Back Sunday, Something Corporate, The Used anyone?). Exiting in Desert Hot Springs we brought our emo music sing along to a close and entered into our hidden paradise: Two Bunch Palms.
Two Bunch Palms is a special place. In the 1800s, a settler journaled his discovery of what is now the resort’s property, stating that rest and water could be found beneath the two palms. For 600 years, these hot mineral waters served as a respite for fatigued travelers. These days, a similar theme exists beneath the palms- but instead of weary pioneers, the resort now serves as an eco friendly (100% sustainable solar energy powered) luxury oasis for Hollywood A-listers to get away from the limelight, LA workaholics to enjoy some R&R and for tourists from around the globe to experience the magic of the healing waters.
The natural mineral hot springs at Two Bunch Palms are filtered into the heated meditative grotto, 3 more private first come first serve pools and large wooden baths in the soaking area of the resort. Here you will also find lounge chairs to relax and take a break from floating beneath the palms, a juice bar to fuel up on those essential nutrients and most importantly: peace and quiet to reflect and practice the art of doing nothing. Though my past year has been full of practicing “the pause,” I still find it quite difficult to lounge all day even while on vacation (I’m working on it). Luckily, Two Bunch Palms had a selection of complimentary wellness activities to immerse myself in. Rob and I enjoyed a meditation in the viewpoint room that overlooked the resort and the breathtaking landscape of the vast desert. Michael, our instructor led an insightful and humorous discussion about mindfulness meditation and took us into a deep meditative state, where we focused on our breath through the tip of our nose and left with the natural high that meditation can often bring. I tried Tai Chi Qigong for the first time, during the exercise of slow and fluid movements I felt as if I was floating in the clouds, and my soul was doing a rhythmic dance. Hearing the familiar sound of hummingbirds flying by and even the slight hum of the breeze passing my ears was pure bliss. Missing out on the Vino & Van Gogh / Paint Play & Pino class, Shaman Journey of Your Destiny and the Harmonies & Rhythms of the Drums classes had me checking my calendar to see when I could come back.
Aside from floating and meditating, Rob and I also indulged in a couples massage followed by a Roman bath where I was blown away in the best way by my masseuse Alex’s “magic hands.” It was hard to choose from the spa menu as so many unique healing treatments were offered. The long periods of soaking often led to hunger, and we found ourselves at their restaurant Essence quite often; sitting at the wooden throne chairs facing the scenery of the snow topped mountains. Having many dietary restrictions; Rob is Vegan, and I am gluten and dairy free (so LA I know), we were pleased to find we had quite a few selections to choose from and the restaurant was very accommodating to our dietary needs when requested. Each morning I enjoyed every last bite of my chia seed pudding, where they blended the coconut milk with dates for added sweetness- which I found absolutely brilliant and delicious. I was satisfied with a salad option for lunch, and Rob with the Rosemary White Bean Soup. Our favorite dinner was the flavorful Chickpea Curry, (I stole many bite’s from Rob’s plate, sorry sweetie), and Salmon with Lentils, Sunchokes and Salsa Verde, with a side of sautéed spinach, and truffle fries of course. Dining in our robes and topping off our nights with the vegan wine was the cherry on top of our days.
Though we hit the hay early each night to catch up on some zzzz’s, we were told that experiencing the hot springs late night under the stars, while catching a glimpse of the resident guardian white owls was truly something special. It appears I have racked up many reasons to find my way back to this magical place.
“You are ruled by everything until you understand the power in doing nothing,” the secret at the heart of Two Bunch Palms, and undoubtedly the goal of the resort is to help you experience the vast openness felt when you are able to relax and just be. Scientifically and spiritually, water has proven to have significant therapeutic and restorative benefits. I found truth in this and the phrase “water heals,” with my experience at Two Bunch Palms, leaving restored and re-grounded, just as I had hoped. I am so grateful to know that anytime life gets overwhelming or I am just looking for a nice place to getaway, all I have to do is head to the desert, spot the two palms and rest easy knowing the healing waters will come to the rescue.
Thanks to TWO BUNCH PALMS for these magical experiences <3
